Print Length 101
Print length refers to the measured distance of several print repeats over at least a 10’ span. This is an important concept for successful re-registering and digital print finishing.
To measure print repeat, take a printed sample and lay it across the floor. Use a tape measure and measure the leading edge of the first print mark to the leading edge of the last print mark. The distance is the print repeat and is expressed as long, short, or dead on in 10’.
For example, a mark was printed every 12” on label stock, and when measured from the first mark to the tenth it was 1/8” short in 10’. On the same press using the same plate roll, a mark was printed on 10 pt tag stock, and when measured over 10 repeats it was 1/8” long in 10’. In general, the thinner the material the shorter the print repeat, and the thicker the material the longer the print repeat.
This is an easy concept to prove on your flexo press. Simply print a single color on several different types of materials and compare them. You’ll soon find your results very predictable.
•Short print length on thick material will cause excessive web tension for re-register.
•Long print length on thin material will cause a lack of web tension for re-register.
